The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) delivered water treatment materials to flood-ravaged eastern Libya on Thursday.
"The first shipment of 700 kg of water treatment material was dispatched to Libya's General Company of Water and Wastewater," UNICEF said in a statement.
On September 10, Libya saw its worst floods in decades, killing thousands and severely destroying the region's infrastructure.
According to UNICEF, approximately 300,000 children who were exposed to Storm Daniel have an increased risk of diarrhea and cholera, as well as dehydration and hunger, heightened risks of violence and exploitation. At least 55 children have already been poisoned as a result of drinking filthy water in Derna, according to the National Center for Disease Control.
The rushing flood waters during the storm also ruined water networks and sewage pipes, contaminating the water in the affected districts, according to the UN Support Mission in Libya.
UNICEF is coordinating the humanitarian response in Derna and most other impacted areas with the government and the UN country team. The objective is to increase life-saving aid, namely health and water and sanitation supplies, psychosocial support, family tracing, and water-borne disease prevention.
