Spanish police arrest 27 in porn sweep

Africa Leader Wednesday 17th December, 2003

Spanish police arrested 27 people across the country who allegedly belonged to an Internet child pornography ring, the EFE agency reported Wednesday.

Police detained the suspects in 18 provinces and 24 cities in what officials said was the largest such operation against child pornography ever carried out in Spain.

Last May, a special National Police squad first discovered Spanish-language Internet Web sites and chat rooms dedicated to swapping images of toddlers and children being sexually abused by adults.

Police said the suspects would be charged with prostitution and child abuse. The contents of some 30 computers seized in the raids were being analyzed.

The sweep comes a day after a similar one in France, involving 450 police officers that targeted 85 people, 70 of whom were taken into custody.
